It goes without saying that 2020 has been a tough year for everyone, and it doesn’t stop here, we have a couple of tough months ahead of us before we can start thinking about getting back to some sort of normality. It’s scary, and it’s hard, but we can get through it and we can make 2021 a year to remember (but for all of the right reasons this time!).
The act of “self-love” is defined as “a state of appreciation for oneself that grows from actions that support our physical, psychological and spiritual growth”. There is no doubt that loving ourselves and learning to appreciate what we have has enormously helped us cope during these testing time.
But for some people, the act of practising self-love is difficult and it’s hard to know where to start. I’ve come up with 5 simple things that you can do to incorporate self-love into your daily routines as we enter 2021.
1. Words of Affirmation
This is probably the most obvious and most recognised act of self-love, but how many of us actually stick to it? Some people underestimate the power it has, and simply see looking at yourself in the mirror and telling yourself that “you are worth it” quite silly. I can understand why, but it’s so important to block out those negative thoughts. You are worthy of self-love, and you are worthy of complimenting yourself. So, go on, every day this month I want you to look in the mirror and tell yourself that “you are worth it” and that “you are enough”.
2. Spend Quality Time Alone
If you’re one of those people who enjoys just being in the moment and having a chance to stop and reflect, then practice self-love by giving yourself some time and space alone and let yourself recharge. Go for a walk, watch the sunset, read your favourite book, paint a picture or do whatever you want to do. The key here is that you avoid all distractions and allow yourself to feel happy and refreshed in the moment.
3. Treat yourself with a small gift
Sometimes we get so caught up in our crazy lives, that we forget to simply treat ourselves. We might feel guilty for investing in ourselves, but the truth is, investing in ourselves and showing ourselves appreciation and thought is really going to help us on our self-love journeys. Treating yourself with a small gift doesn’t have to be expensive, simply pick out a bouquet of flowers for your living room or buy yourself a yummy snack from the local bakery – you deserve it!
4. Random Acts of Kindness
Just like you’d do something kind for someone you love, like cooking them a tasty meal, it’s so important that we do these random acts of kindness for ourselves too. I challenge you to set yourself a target of doing 3 random acts of kindness for yourself every month. It could be something as simple as making your bed in the morning or tidying up your personal spaces.
5. Feel more in tune with your body
Self-love isn’t just about loving yourself physically, but that is still a piece of the puzzle. Take some time for yourself and focus on looking after your body, as well as your mind. Some fun ways to do this could be signing up to a new gym class, painting your nails, giving yourself a makeover or simply doing a few stretches every morning.
