The journey began in 2017, after losing a family member to Cancer.
A few months after their passing, we were clearing out their home filled with 30 plus years of memories. Memorabilia stacked on shelves, papers & trinkets spilling out of drawers, photographs hung on every inch of the walls. Possessions of all kinds being sold, donated or even trashed. It got me thinking, “If you can’t leave with any of your physical items, what makes them so important? You see, in my eyes I find the moments you share & relationships you have with others are far more valuable than any form of materialism.

Ok, now I’m not saying because I devalue materialism that I live in an empty apartment, sleep on the floor and not own a damn thing. On the contrary, I i enjoy many of my possessions. Ive just simply learned to live with less & have downplayed their importance.
See, the idea of minimalism to me is not necessarily living with x amount of items, or painting your walls white, & only wearing neutral colors. It’s more so living intentionally. You see, it’s time to prioritize your life. The idea of stuff can easily consume your life to the point of no return. And it’s not just those physical items that can bog you down too. Look at every aspect of your life – the things you own, your career path, the people you’re spending time with…all of which are important. Why spend your life with unnecessary possessions, a career that’s not going anywhere, or people you can’t stand.
Simplify your life.
“Make room for things that matter by removing everything that doesn’t” – Brian Gardner
After being on this journey for a few years now, I can say living with less has given me more clarity & helped me focus on moments instead of things. I can’t tell you how overwhelmed I used to feel when items ruled my life. I used to be an avid therapy shopper. Instead of dealing with my emotions or certain obstacles, I would mend those feelings by purchasing new clothing or makeup products [I can expand on that a bit later]. Bottom line is, going on this “less is more” journey has made me feel so much happier in my life. I live in the moment more. I have better relationships with family, friends, and loved ones. I have an overall sense of gratitude for life.

This is such a beautiful post. I have to admit that I’m such a sentimental person about objects and I’ve been trying so hard to stop keeping all these unecessary things. I always feel happier when I have a sort out and throw things away that I no longer need 🙂

Beautifully written! I’m in the same boat as you. I wouldn’t say I’m a minimalist but I have learned to minimized my possessions and can easily let them go. When I got married last year, I sold everything including my wedding dress! My family thought I was crazy but it didn’t make sense to me to hold on to it when it wasn’t going to be used! I like to say that I’m an intentional buyer and that I’m picky about what I let into my home and I make sure it’s something I really want and not settle for less. xo

This is such a wonderful post! I can really see how life soon becomes all about stuff! I probably have slightly more than I need, but my sides are all clear of clutter and everything does have it’s place, so I’m very content!

I absolutely loved reading this and it speaks directly to my heart. Thank you so much for sharing it. I agree wholeheartedly with your words and while everything has its place, these days I chase moments and memories. I still do enjoy the occasional splurge and retail therapy lol, but then usually something else has to make room for it and go. ☺️

In 2021 my goal is to live intentionally and definitely let go of things and items that do not spark joy in my life. Many people do not realize that we have so many possessions surrounding us that are simply taking up space. I always ask myself when was the last time I used this… and based on that answer I have no problem with tossing it or donating it.

This was really interesting. I’m one of those people that adds sentimental value to items. Anything that reminds me of a person or phase of life adds value, almost like they help tell the story of me. A completely different outlook I guess. I like to have a clear out of the clutter and things that serve no purpose/ hold no value, but I don’t think true minimalism will ever be my thing x

I like the idea of living with less, and I think I am trying to move towards that slowly, but surely! Your post had a very good point on the fact that we will not be able to bring any of those items we seem to love with us once we pass on, so I am going to start thinking about being more mindful when purchasing something. Thank you!

I like the idea of doing a bit of decluttering every few months but I don’t think I could ever be a full minimalist! I never throw out birthday or Christmas cards…but I love the idea of one and think it’s nice xx

I completely agree that just because you live a minimalist and simple life, it doesn’t mean you don’t have belongings. If anything, you have things that have meaning or purpose rather than clutter.

This is such a helpful post! It really is challenging for me to part with the things that were given to me by my Grandparents who are no longer with us. I do try to use these items on special occasions and limit it to one thing only. I have definitely been downsizing since the pandemic started and agree that minimizing is the way to go for me. Thanks for sharing!

Such a lovely post! I’ve tried to become more minimalist and reduce the number of things I own but I’m a sucker for photographs and scrapbooks as I find the objects help to reignite the memories!

This is such a deep post. Your words truly resonated with me and got me thinking about minimalism in a way I haven’t before. I admire that you have such an interest in this topic. I can literally feel your passion in this post. You have excellent points, especially when you said that moments and relationships with others are more important than objects. I understand objectives can have sentimental value, but as you explained, we cannot take any of those items with us when we are not on the planet anymore. This was a great read!
